Lucy Elliot: Clowning about in Marcie
LUCY ELLIOT, WHO PLAYS DAYNA JENKINS ON SHORTLAND ST, IS SMITTEN WITH HER COMPACT CAR
What car do you drive?
A Nissan March! I bought it because it’s cost effective and cute.
Have you given it a nickname?
My best friend calls it the “Bubble Car” because everything on it is round, but I’ve also heard people call it “Clown Car”. One friend asked me recently when I was about to drive home, “Do you get into it, or do you have to put it on?” because it’s so small. My dad and I did nickname the car Marcie.
When did you start to drive? Who taught you drive?
I started to drive when I was about 18-19, I’m now 21. My father taught me how to drive. We both drove little mopeds first to get used to traffic and stuff, and I’d like to think I was an easy student! I was pretty scared of hopping behind a wheel and put it off for a long time.
What are your three top tips for teens about to go for their learners/restricted licence?
Number one, READ. THE. ROAD. CODE. There are so many people I know who say stuff like, “Oh, I’ll just learn as I go”. Number two would have to be, “Be extremely cautious, drive like everyone on the road is gonna kill you”. That’s some advice my dad gave me. Three, check your blind spot! I nearly learnt that the hard way.
Have you been on a road trip yet in the car?
Yep, I drove to Whangamata over Labour Weekend. My essentials are water, sunglasses and some good music to listen to while you drive.
As a young driver in Auckland, what scares you the most?
Rush hour traffic. Everyone drives like maniacs and isn’t thinking about the other drivers because they’re focused on getting to their destination on time.
What do you listen to when driving?
At the moment I don’t have an AUX cord in my car and my radio only goes so high, so I have a big blue CD case with a whole bunch of old (and some new) CDs in it. Presently I have Addictive by Missy Elliott playing in my car.
What would be your dream road trip overseas?
I would really like to do a road trip of Europe. I think that’d be something really cool to do with friends.
What would be your dream car?
Gonna be honest, my knowledge of cars is pretty small, but I watch Top Gear with dad a lot, and one of my favourite cars that I’ve seen on there is the Aston Martin Vanquish. So maybe one of those in a really bold cool colour.
Who would be your dream passenger?
I’d like to drive with American actor Chris Evans because he is a babe.
