SVG's Bathurst '2:01' is your thursday thriller
Ride shotgun with Shane van Gisbergen for a new Bathurst lap record
Greg Murphy did it in 2003, and Shane van Gisbergen did it in 2016 — blurring the lines of what is possible while peddling around Australasia's favourite mountain (yeah, Ruapehu? More like 'Ruape-who?').
After back-to-back Bathurst 1000 disappointments, van Gisbergen's lap-record breaking run at the hill of skill would no doubt have been sweet. Made sweeter the following day of course after he and teammates Alvaro Parente and Jonathan Webb took a memorable victory.
Watching the lap below, you can see why van Gisbergen and the crew were so dominant. Their 650S GT3 looks supremely compliant and forgiving, with van Gisbergen's input through the steering wheel so minimal and precise — as Bathurst's cold concrete walls flash by. An incredible effort.
