Vitronic, a German industrial automation and traffic technology company, has released its Enforcement Trailer, which is a lidar-based, bulletproof, WiFi-connected and autonomous speed camera.
Designed primarily for use in locations that are dangerous or difficult for human operators, the new Enforcement Trailer is touted as the next generation in speed enforcement and traffic surveillance.
Laser-based Lidar technology allows the trailer to simultaneously measure all vehicles across multiple lanes, while its wireless data connection can constantly update variable speed limits specific to certain times, along with different types of vehicles.
The Enforcement Trailer is able to be transported by any vehicle with a tow bar, while it also features a remote-controlled drive function allowing it to be easily positioned when on site.
Although it looks like it just gets left defenceless on the side of the road, the Vitronic trailer has its own means of protecting itself.
When in position, the trailer retracts its chassis and wheels to prevent any would-be thief or angry motorist from attempting to hitch it to their vehicle and tow it away.
If that doesn’t stop them, an in-built alarm system alerts authorities if the trailer has been tampered with. Thirdly, its bullet-proof shell protects it from armed attackers.
The Vitronic Enforcement Trailer packs high-performance batteries, allowing it to serve a working week on one charge. Should extended service be required, the batteries can simply be replaced on-site.
France has already deployed 150 of these trailers throughout its road network, and has recently ordered an additional 100 units. Germany has also testing the devices with the aim of putting them to active use on its roads.
