McLaren P1 GTR to be made road legal by outside firm
A British firm, with deep links to McLaren, is offering owners of the track-only McLaren P1 GTR a chance to enjoy their hyper-hypercar on public roads. According to Autocar, Lanzante will help owners of the track-only McLaren P1 GTR make their cars legal for use on public roads. Lazante, which is based in Hampshire, UK, is a company that specialises in classic British sports cars and has a long-standing relationship with McLaren. Together, the companies triumphed at the 1995 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Lazante-run McLaren F1 GTR. Dean Lazante told the British publication: "We will be tackling all conversions on a case-by-case basis. What we do will depend on where the customer wants to run the car and what the regulations are in that region." These changes will likely add weight and blunt performance somewhat, but Lazante hopes to "keep as much of that spirit as we can" and promises that the road legal P1 GTR "will still be lighter, have more power, better aero" than the regular P1. McLaren is reportedly not actively participating in the road legalisation project, but has given its tacit approval and will help out where necessary. No pricing has been indicated for this project. Work on the first conversion isn't expected to begin until the mid-year mark. The P1 GTR is a track-only version of the hybrid road-legal P1 hypercar. Engineered without the constraints of heading out onto the open road, the P1 GTR weighs just 1440kg and features a 736kW hybrid drivetrain comprised of a 588kW 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 and a 147kW electric motor. By way of comparison, the P1 has a mere 673kW of power at its disposal. Only owners of the original P1 were offered a chance to buy the P1 GTR. Autocar claims that over 40 P1 GTRs have been sold so far at around 2 million pounds ($3.9 million) a pop.
