Isuzu New Zealand says its new MU-X seven-seater has the potential to be a game changer in the booming SUV sector.
The new model was launched to the press in Auckland late last week.
Isuzu utes general manager Murray Greenhalgh said the maximum torque in the MU-X has been boosted from 380Nm to 430Nm. The model has a 3-litre double overhead cam, 4-cylinder turbo charged motor.
At 3000kg of towing power, Isuzu says the MU-X can happily tow that weight all day.
Aside from engine improvements, there is the standard new front grille.
The new upgrade, purpose-built for the New Zealand market, also has new front and rear bumpers, LED projector lights (also daytime running lights), a new spoiler on the back, 18 inch alloys and the front pillars are narrower allowing improved vision.
Isuzu New Zealand has only one version of the MU-X on the market, so all those items are standard. The seven-seat model comes with leather upholstery, a 10.2 inch media screen for passengers, and sat nav plus reversing camera. The rear passengers also get their own independent air conditioning.
For $65,990 including GST, the MU-X is competitively placed alongside other similar styled 'tough' SUVs, the Toyota Fortuner and Holden Trailblazer. Look out for the Driven road test in the next few weeks to see how it measures up.
Meanwhile Foton has launched a 2-wheel-drive Double Cab Tunland model, on sale for $29,990. The model includes a Cummins 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, rear parking sensors, cruise control, daytime running lamps and automatic headlights.
The CEO of Foton New Zealand, Roger Jory, said: "The Tunland 2WD option adds a great ute at an outstanding price to a section of the market that simply has no need to pay for a 4WD."
The vehicle has 16-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, rear parking sensors, cruise control, daytime running lamps and automatic headlights, Hill Hold Assist.
"Anyone with a 'used ute' budget can get a brand new Tunland, with a three-year warranty and loads of spec, for the same price as some used utes with a whole lot of K's on the clock, " he said.
Foton produces more than 650,000 vehicles annually.
