Ferrari will unveil their fastest, most powerful production car to date at Geneva International Motor Show in three weeks time, appropriately named the 812 Superfast.
This new V12 model is an improved ‘extreme performance’ version of the V12 Berlietta, a car that never struggled in the power department.
Ferrari say the 812 Superfast will usher in a new era for both the company and its 12-cylinder history thanks to lessons learned with the F12 Berlinetta and F12 TDF.
It is aimed at customers demanding the most powerful and exclusive model in the range, said to deliver as both a grand tourer on the road and weapon on track.
Go back half a decade and many motoring commentators were worried the V12 engine had become an endangered species, falling victim to modern day emission standards – Ferrari are clearly unfazed by modern regulations, continuing to development of the iconic configuration.
The new mid-front mounted 6.5-litre V12 engine produces 588 kW, maximum power output will be achieved at 8,500 rpm. A horsepower figure is still to be released but the ‘812’ model designation seems tantalizingly close to the kilowatts rating.
All 12-cyinders help to achieve a maximum torque figure of 718 Nm at 7000 rpm, 80 per cent of which will be available from 3,500 rpm.
These performance levels were achieved in part by adopting a 350 bar (5076 pound per square inch) direct injection system, pairing it with variable geometry intake tracts originating from those used in naturally-aspirated F1 engines.
The 812 Superfast’s dual-clutch transmission has specific gear ratios which, combined with shorter up and down-shifting times between gears, sharpen throttle response still further.
The 812 Superfast will be the first Ferrari equipped with electric power steering, used to fully exploit the potential of the car’s performance. Supported by complete integration with all the electronic vehicle dynamics controls including the latest 5.0 version of Ferrari’s patented Side Slip Control (SSC)
The vehicle controls also feature the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system, an evolution from lessons learned with the F12 TDF's 1.0 version.
The body of the 812 Superfast was designed in-house by the Ferrari Styling Centre. The car’s fastback silhouette and high tail are a throwback to the 1964 365 GTB4.
Bodywork has a re-worked front and rear, channeling air across the body into the air intakes, active air flaps and creating down force.
The car will be launched in a special new colour, Rosso Settanta, which marks the company’s 70th anniversary.
Inside, the interior of the 812 Superfast has been revised to reflect the aggressive exterior featuring new seats, steering wheel, digital dashboard, dials, and the latest infotainment and air-conditioning units.
Driven will be at Geneva International Motor Show to report the latest when the 812 Superfast is officially unveiled.
