Kia Carnival first with 2016 ANCAP rating
By Kia • 22/03/2016
The eight-seater Kia Carnival has become the first vehicle to pass the stringent 2016 ANCAP crash safety requirements, scoring a maximum 5 star rating in the process.
The requirements to achieve a 5 star 2016 ANCAP rating are more difficult compared to those requirements in 2015 and previous years. The 2016 safety rating applies to all variants of the Kia Carnival manufactured from December 2015 on sale in New Zealand and Australia. Vehicles manufactured prior to that date retain a 4 star ANCAP rating.
ANCAP uses a range of internationally recognised crash tests and safety assessments undertaken by independent specialist laboratories.
A suite of crash tests are conducted mimicking the most common types of crashes. Vehicles must achieve minimum scores across all physical crash tests for each ANCAP safety rating level.
In all physical crash tests, dummies are used to scientifically measure the various forces on occupants and pedestrians. The data gathered from the dummies is then assessed and scores determined for each respective crash test.
In addition, vehicles are required to be fitted with certain safety assist technologies (SAT). The overall score is then translated into an ANCAP safety rating of 1 to 5 stars, with higher scores and greater safety features awarded more stars. To achieve a 5 star rating, a vehicle must score a minimum of 32.5 points out of 37 – the Kia Carnival comfortably surpassed that mark with 34.62 points.
The Kia Carnival is available in New Zealand in three model variants, powered by a choice of either a 2.2-litre common rail diesel engine or 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine. Featuring a bold and distinctive SUV-style exterior design, the Carnival was also selected by US-based Ward’s Automotive magazine as having one of the world’s Ten Best Interiors.
Prices for the Kia Carnival start from $49,990 plus ORC, and all Kia vehicles benefit from a 5-year/100,000km factory warranty programme.
