Peugeot 308 crowned the AMI insurance NZ Autocar of the year 2014
By Peugeot • 04/12/2014
New Zealand’s leading motoring critics have judged the Peugeot 308 as the overall winner in the 21st annual AMI Insurance NZ Autocar Car of the Year awards.
After final back-to-back road testing of the six category winners, the Peugeot 308 topped the judging, outpointing the Honda Jazz to take the overall win.
Each of the six finalists in the NZ Autocar magazine award was assessed out of 100 points taking into account aspects such as design, performance, dynamics, practicality and value. The scoring was weighted so that cars in each category could reasonably be compared with those from another.
NZ Autocar editor and chief judge, Kyle Cassidy, said; “Being European Car of the Year, the 308 had a point to prove but it won the judges over convincingly. The overall Car of the Year is always the vehicle that scores consistently through the five criteria, meaning it has to be bloody good at everything to fare well. And this the 308 indeed does well. It is a well-conceived and delivered package, one that exceeds your expectations, and is a deserved winner of the 2014 AMI Insurance NZ Autocar Car of the Year award.”
What the judges had to say:
“Another overachiever. Doesn’t do much wrong, does plenty right and it’s the only one here I’d consider buying.” Peter Louisson, NZ Autocar Senior Road Test Editor.
“Feels light and agile despite its comfort-oriented chassis. The finish inside gives it an impression of class.” Paul Owen – former NZ Autocar Editor and veteran of 18 Autocar COTY events.
“An absolute delight. From the gutsy engine to the willing go-kart like chassis, the 308 may wear the same number as before, but this is a completely different car.” Shaun Summerfield, NZ Autocar contributor.
“The most surprising car of the group for me, if offers a great ride and compliance over rough roads, and excellent steering. It has a sophisticated feel that belies its price.” Stu Owers, NZ Autocar contributor.
The other finalists included: * Under $30K class winner – Honda Jazz * $45K-60K class winner – Nissan X-Trail * $60K-100K class winner – Mercedes-Benz C 200 * Performance class winner - Subaru WRX * Luxury class winner - BMW X5
Last year's winner of the AMI Insurance NZ Autocar Car of the Year award was the Volkswagen Golf.
