Good things take time — that’s how the saying goes, and it’s spot on. Robin Scott understands this to the fullest and for 43 years she’s been patient and persevered through all the highs and lows car ownership can throw her way.
The result: in 2016 we can still savour the sight and sound of a lovingly cared for, period correct, 1934 Ford sedan, commonly referred to as a “Fordor”.
Inspired by the story of Bonnie & Clyde, who favoured the 1934 Ford due to it being the fastest car around at the time, Aucklander Scott jumped at the chance to own the genuine article. It had the history, style and lines she was looking for in a classic car.
Scott’s “Fordor” was New Zealand new, arriving in 1934 from its manufacturing plant in Canada. It wasn’t exactly in “fresh import” condition, however, when Scott got her hands on it.
“It was quite a common sight back then to see vehicles lying around in front yards,” she said.
“I acquired it in full working but very tired condition.”

“We immediately removed the motor and had it totally reconditioned. At the same time, we prepared the body for a new paint job, and new upholstery with the same traditional fabric used in these cars.
“Four years ago I put in a new radiator after the original one overheated due to blocked fins after 80 years of motoring.”
The car has only 59,000 original kilometres on the clock, and Scott has done her best to keep that number low.
“I take it out most weekends for a cruise but use my modern car during the week. This keeps the mileage down,” she said.
“Being a female and having a vintage car can cause a stir and comments when out in it.”
This isn’t the only car from 1934 Scott has owned — a Ford three -window coupe once graced her driveway, but the “Fordor” was the only vehicle to last.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and, after creating half a lifetime’s worth of memories, Scott is looking to find the 1934 Ford Sedan a new home by listing it on Driven.co.nz
