The ultra-rare 32-year-old Austin Metro Vanden Plas being auctioned

An Austin Metro described as being in “brand new” condition will go under the hammer at the Classic Car Auctions (CCA) sale at Carfest South in the UK at the end of the month.

One of five Vanden Plas Metros remaining in the UK, the car has covered just 741 miles since it left the factory in 1983.

The Metro was once a common sight on the road, with more than 1.3 million sold in Britain. However, only 500 were built in range-topping Vanden Plas specification.

The list of “luxuries” on the Vanden Plas includes a radio-cassette player, electric front windows, leather upholstery, and a remote boot release.

Guy Lees-Milne, general manager of CCA, said: “This is a unique opportunity to own an incredibly rare car, at no reserve. This example is one to potentially bubble-wrap for the future.”

The current owner of the car added: “I doubt you will find another Metro like this in the world. I don’t even think that anyone has ever sat in the passenger seats.”

CarFest South takes place at 1979 Formula One World Champion Jody Scheckter’s Laverstock Park Farm in Hampshire, with the Metro joining nearly 100 cars due to be auctioned.

In addition, a host of charity lots will be offered, with 100 per cent of the hammer price plus fees donated to BBC Children in Need.

A similar auction was held at CarFest North at the weekend, although this was overshadowed by the death of stunt pilot Kevin Whyman, whose plane crashed while performing at the event.
