Former Top Gear presenter James May has cashed-in his beloved Porsche 911 by selling it at auction for more than NZ$100,000 - almost twice the price he expected.

May bought the 1984 Porsche 911 in 2007. He had been recording the Radio 4 documentary 'Speed, Greed and the M25' when he came across the Porsche.

The petrolhead was so impressed with the 152mph German sports car's condition he decided to buy it on the spot.

But after recently spending more than NZ$200,000 on the last ever Ferrari 458 Speciale, May decided to get rid of the Porsche, which he calls a 'hobby car' that was only driven in good weather.

The Porsche was entered into Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed sale over the weekend, with a guide price of around NZ$56,000.

It ended up exceeding all expectations with the winning bidder eventually paying around NZ$103,000 for it.

The 911, known for its ruthlessness on corners, is powered by a 3.2-litre engine which gives it a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds and top speed of 152mph.
