A V8 Supercars support category driver airlifted to hospital after a spectacular Mount Panorama crash sparked by a shunt from his brother is expected to make a full recovery.
Aussie Racing Cars driver Damien Flack suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung after his vehicle went into a horror roll on Conrod Straight before catching fire track-side on Saturday.
Flack received contact from behind by his brother Adrian during the race and spun before rolling six times at a speed of up to 230km/hr.
It happened barely 24 hours after Chaz Mostert’s shock Bathurst 1000 crash on the mountain that hospitalised the Ford V8 star and injured three track-side officials.
Officials said on Sunday that Flack was still in Liverpool hospital but “his condition has improved significantly”.
Aussie Racing Cars category manager Brad Ward praised safety staff after describing Flack’s accident as one of the biggest ever seen in the class.
“We are very thankful of the efforts of the track medical staff and emergency response teams who assisted when the incident occurred,” Ward told speedcafe.com website.
“The crash occurred at the fastest part of the circuit and is one of the biggest we’ve ever seen in ARC history.
“This is testament to the strength of the chassis and drivers safety cell which was unreached in the incident.
“Together with the Aussie Racing Cars family, we wish Damien a quick recovery.”
