TORONTO, Canada, June 14 AFP - Josef Newgarden won the IndyCar Toronto Grand Prix on Sunday, leading a CFH Racing one-two finish ahead of team-mate Luca Filippi.

America’s Newgarden crossed the finish line in the 85-lap race on the 1.755-mile (2.82 km) Exhibition Place street circuit 1.4485 seconds ahead of his Italian team-mate to capture his second race of the season.

New Zealand's Scott Dixon finished in eighth place.

“I’m so proud of these guys. I wouldn’t have expected this,” said Sarah Fisher, the retired driver who is co-owner of the team that debuted this year after her Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing outfit merged with Ed Carpenter Racing.

It was a welcome turnaround after CFH had a pair of blown Chevrolet engines last week at Texas Motor Speedway, where Newgarden was relegated to 21st and Carpenter to 22nd in a field of 23.

“That we could give this team a one-two in its first year is just amazing,” said Newgarden, who also won at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama in April. “Hopefully we can continue to do this.”

Team Penske team-mates Helio Castroneves of Brazil and Will Power of Australia were third and fourth, with 2014 Toronto winner Sebastien Bourdais rounding out the top five.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya finished seventh to maintain his series points lead over reigning series champion Power through 10 races.   The race ended a 10-week stretch of on-track activity for the series.   The next race is on June 27 at Fontana, California.   -AFP
