Speed limits for parts of the Nurburgring Nordschleife track are likely to be rescinded soon.

A senior member of the auto industry told American magazine Road & Track that the management company in charge of the German circuit is close to rolling back the speed limits, which were put in place after an accident.

Last month we reported that the Nordschleife’s management company, Capricorn Nurburgring, was forced to impose speed limits along certain sections of the 20.81km circuit after a Nissan GT-R flipped during an endurance race, killing a spectator. As well as speed restrictions, manufacturers are banned from attempting lap records, which are often used for bragging rights.

It’s understood that there’s a 200km/h restriction on the Tiergarten, Flugplatz, Schwedenkreuz and Antoniusbuche, while vehicles are limited to a top speed of 250km/h along the Doettinger Hoehe straight.

Road & Track says it’s unknown whether the ban on record lap runs will also be lifted.

Several touring car series compete on the Nordschleife, the highlight being the 24 Hours Nurburgring weekend in mid-May. The F1 Grand Prix uses a modern circuit nearby.
