Who said the outside line is the worst one?
Two forms of motorsport have enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last 10 or so years; drifting and rallycross.
Growing up, my only real exposure to rallycross was the snippets of UK highlights that would find themselves into the old half-hour Motorsport Asia shows on Sky. They were a rough and tumble formula to follow, with most of the cars on the grid free of sponsors — shapes and manufacturers of all ages represented. It was great fun, but not necessarily what one would call ‘professional’.
Fast forward to now, and rallycross is a juggernaut in world motorsport. Attracting huge names like Petter Solberg and Ken Block, plus names from other motorsport disciplines like DTM star Mattias Ekström, rallycross is now an international sensation; with two major international championships now in operation.
Any notion of grassroots motorsport in those fields is now gone — replaced by grids full of machines with incredible performance and bottomless financial values. Not to mention quality driving talent across the board.
Among the talent is 20-year-old Kevin Eriksson. Debuting in the FIA European World Rallycross Championship at the age of just 17, Kevin won an event in his first season. He's also capable of performing absolutely nutty passing moves like the one above. Situated on the outside of Solberg and Ekström — two of the biggest names in the sport — he out brakes them and flings his Ford Fiesta with stupid precision across their noses.
There's a point in the vision where he looks almost parked there, but the momentum sticks and he rockets off into the sunset with a handy lead.
Fantastic racing.
