Scott Dixon takes sixth, as Will Power closes the gap to series leader
New Zealand's Scott Dixon has finished sixth at the latest round of the 2016 IndyCar Series at Pocono.
Starting the ABC Supply 500 from 19th on the grid, Dixon made continual inroads throughout the race. Improved race pace saw the Chip Ganassi Racing pilot fight through to eighth with the chequered flag in sight, with Dixon then passing two more drivers to eventually finish the race in sixth. Dixon's result sees him leap from sixth in the championship to fourth.
Today's race was punctuated by a terrifying crash in pit lane between Charlie Kimball, 2016 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi, and Helio Castroneves — Rossi and Kimball colliding with each other as Rossi left his pit stall, with the contact sending the airborne Rossi tumbling over the top of the innocent Castroneves. Thankfully all three drivers emerged unscathed, but the incident has once again shone the spotlight on the safety of open-cockpit race cars.
Australian Will Power took the win; his fourth of the season. The win was made even more significant when series leader Simon Pagenaud failed to finish. Power, who has enjoyed a surge of speed over the second half of the season via six consecutive podium finishes (four of those podiums being race wins), is now only 20 points behind Pagenaud in the standings.
Pagenaud ran away with the series lead in the opening half of the season, after finishing second in the two opening races of the season then winning three times on the trot. But having only climbed the podium twice since the Indianapolis 500 in May, Power now appears to have the momentum and the advantage.
Mikhail Aleshin, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Josef Newgarden, and Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top five finishers.
The series now moves to Texas, with only three races in the season remaining.
