Burglars strike Supercars Championship regular's home
Regular co-driver in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, Oliver Gavin, has had his home broken into and some of his memorabilia stolen. Gavin confirmed the news on his Twitter page while at Road America for the latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech United SportsCar Championship.
Gavin, who's British but is now based in the US, is best known for his role as one of Chevrolet's longest-serving factory GT drivers. He first joined the team in 2002, and has since won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Sebring, and Petit Le Mans five times each — among several other accolades for the beloved bowtie.
Gavin has also recently made a name for himself in Australia, where he's regarded as one of the category's leading international co-drivers. Known as 'Olly' in the paddock, Gavin made his Supercars debut with Kiwi Greg Murphy at the 2011 Gold Coast 600, where the pair earned two top-six finishes.
Hooked, Gavin returned to take on the Bathurst 1000 in 2014 with former winner Nick Percat at Walkinshaw Racing, and through the late-race dramas the pair claimed a memorable third-place finish. He will once again return with Percat to take on the mountain in 2016.
Among the items stolen from his home was the helmet he's used while competing in the Supercars. Perhaps less replaceable and more sentimental are the six 24 Hours of Le Mans coins that were also taken by the thieves. Gavin himself requested his followers to keep an eye out for the items on eBay.
It's not all bad though for the Brit. Following the news he and co-driver Tommy Milner won at Road America this morning.
