The likes of Hennessey, Roush, and RTR have been laying waste to the Ford Mustang aftermarket scene with a raft of hot 700hp+ machines, ready to chug fuel, burn rubber, and vacate your local Cars & Coffee event in a ... serene and slow-moving manner.
But all the while, Ford has no doubt been watching on in the knowledge that their next-gen bruiser — the GT500 — is probably expected to out gun these cars on the spec sheet and on the race track.
We're still a ways from knowing exactly how powerful the GT500 will be. Ford have only said that it would have more than 700hp/521kW from a supercharged V8, although some have rumoured it will be closer to 770hp/540kW — enough to make it the most powerful Ford ever made.
But at the very least, we're now quite a lot closer to knowing what it looks like.
To date, Ford have only released a few light teasers showcasing some of the GT500s angrier features; namely that aggressive front end. But a slew of images appearing to have come from the same reveal event have shown the muscular pony car in full.
The best of them was posted online by Instagram user sinister_lifestyle.
The pair of images line up well with Ford's shadowy teaser imagery. The GT500 sports the 2017-spec S-550 headlights on either side of its much larger central grill set-up. An aggressive splitter set-up channels air around the front wheels, while LEDs top a pair of new ducts on the flanks of the front bumper.
There appears to be plenty of carbon fibre, including down the sideskirts, on the wing mirrors, and on the large rear wing. GT stripes complete the look ... which Mustang faithful appear to have taken quite kindly to if online comments are anything to go by.
Now we await official images and details for the GT500. It's been speculated that it will make its formal debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show in January.
We'll keep our ears firmly to the ground ...
