Since Aston Martin’s own in-house Q-Branch announced last August that it was to build from scratch 25 brand new Goldfinger DB5 cars – complete with gadgets from the classic 1964 James Bond movie - its engineers have been hard at work perfecting them.
And in a progress report complete with new photographs published today they revealed just how far they have progressed with what they dub ‘the ultimate collectors’ fantasy’ thanks to the help of special effects experts – with gadget highlights include revolving number plates, a rear smoke screen, and replica machine guns.
But unlike on film, there is limited ’licence to cheat’ when recreating the cars at Aston Martin’s classics and special editions factory in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire.
However the infamous ejector seat is proving a more difficult challenge though a nod to it in some form or other hasn’t been totally ruled out as a teaser.
Work to create the collectors’ item new Goldfinger DB5 continuation cars with fully functioning gadgets is taking shape with Bond film-maker EON Productions and its Oscar-winning special effects guru Chris Corbould OBE.
Each one costs £3.3 million including taxes with first deliveries to customers in 2020.
Aston Martin pointed out that the DB5 featured in the Goldfinger film included all manner of non-standard equipment supplied by the fictitious Q Branch: from battering rams that emerged out of the front bumper to a retractable bullet-proof rear screen and oil slick delivery system.
But the 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation cars are set to feature a similar array of extras – all standard-fitment on the new cars – which Corbould’s team are currently perfecting.
Subject to final engineering approval, the list of Bond-inspired gadgets will include these features familiar to viewers of the classic 1964 big screen hit.
For the exterior the cars will have:
- Rear smoke-screen delivery system
- Rear simulated oil slick delivery system
- Revolving triple face number-plates front and rear
- Simulated twin front machine guns
- Bullet-resistant rear shield
- Battering rams front and rear
The interior features:
- Simulated radar screen tracker map
- Telephone in driver’s door
- Gear knob actuator button
- Arm rest- and centre console-mounted switchgear
- Under-seat hidden weapons/storage tray
- Optional ejector seat teaser
Insiders said the challenges and safety aspects of creating a fully functioning ejector seat meant they had to look at an alternative which gave a nod towards the most dramatic gadget of them all, activated when the driver flips open the top of the manual gear knob and presses the button underneath.
The car-firm, which also released original blueprints and drawings by Bond designer Ken Adams, said: ‘For the first time in almost 55 years Aston Martin is once again building one of the most iconic sports cars in the world as engineering development continues on the forthcoming Goldfinger DB5 continuation cars.
‘Aside from being remarkable as new-build DB5’s – the 25 new cars’ will also feature an exciting array of working gadgets first seen on screen in the classic James Bond adventure Goldfinger. ‘
However, owners will only be able to drive their cars on private land as they are not road legal.
The Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell is the historic home of the brand for more than half a century and the place where all 898 original DB5 sports cars –which cost £4,175- were manufactured between 1963 and 1965.
Eon Productions’ Special effects expert Chris Corbould said: ‘My involvement has chiefly been with the front guns, smoke screen and oil slick gadgets, with Aston Martin engineers producing the other items.
‘The guns appearing from the front lights were a particular challenge as, in the film world, we are able to use flammable gas mixtures combined with an ignition system to produce a flame and noise effect. Clearly this is not practical in untrained hands, so we have devised a new system to achieve a realistic effect.'
Corbould said the first engineering car was taking shape as they worked through the ‘testing challenges’ of bringing legendary cinema scenes into the real world. He explained: ‘The main challenge has been to recreate the gadgets from the film world and transfer them into a consumer product.
‘We have licence in the film world to ‘cheat’ different aspects under controlled conditions. For instance, we might have four different cars to accommodate four different gadgets. We obviously don't have that luxury on these DB5's as all the gadgets have to work in the same car all the time.’
But he said all the new cars will be ‘authentic reproductions’ of the DB5 seen on screen with some ‘sympathetic modifications’ to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability.
Similarly, all the Goldfinger edition cars will, like the original, be produced to one exterior colour specification in Silver Birch paint.
Until now the closest anyone could get to owning one was to content themselves with the Corgi toy version - with more than 2.5million sold to generations of children.
Lego last year launched a 1,290-piece version costing £129.99.
The DB5 has featured in six subsequent 007 films - Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre.
Paul Spires, president of Aston Martin Works, said: ‘As work progresses on these remarkable cars, it’s both exciting and a little sobering to think that we are truly making history here.’
The Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell is the historic home of the sports car maker where around 13,000 cars were hand-built before production moved to Gaydon, Warwickshire, in 2007.
Ten years later, new car production returned to the site with the DB4 GT Continuation. The DB4 GT Zagato Continuation and now the DB5 Goldfinger Continuation.
The Newport Pagnell site is also a leading heritage service and restoration facility as well as a new car dealership where customers can view, purchase, service and restore cars from every era of the marque’s 106 years.
