Driven Compact Car of the Year: Mazda2

Taking what’s already good and making it better is one thing but the end result doesn’t always deliver the desired result. That’s not the case with the Mazda2. Lined up against its predecessor, this little car looks better, handles better, is church-mouse quiet and far better equipped.
Mazda pruned the price with the entry level GLX manual at $21,745 through to the Limited ($28,595). The Limited’s price is $2000 up on the Sport auto but the newbie comes with staggering array of gear, probably class-leading in the small car segment. Little things, like quickening the steering gear ratio, help make it better.
It’s one thing to be light and nimble; it’s another to translate that into good handling but this little car delivers on every count. Along with appealing looks, there are two other elements to the equation that make the Mazda2 a standout — the technology it carries and the price.
