The Mercedes-AMG GT S is one of those cars that announces its arrival long, long before you see it, with its glorious, bellowing exhaust.

But, fortunately, it is also one of those rare cars that has the looks and presence that managed to not only live up to the promise suggested by the magnificent noise, but also even outdo it. Looks and sound aside, the GT S also happens to have performance and handling chops that can make your mind beg for mercy as it struggles to keep track of things such as breathing amid all the noise, speed and sheer fury that the GT S assaults it with.

While the GT S’s performance is furious and, quite frankly, terrifying at times, it is remarkably easy to get to, while also retaining an incredibly civilised demeanour during sensible, daily driving.

While the similarly excellent Mercedes-AMG C 63 S has the same power and more torque, and is also the more sensible option, it is that almost complete lack of common sense that makes the GT S a truly special car indeed.
