Modern headlight technology is hardly ever explained or discussed, due mainly to it's complexity. And it's no where near as sexy as power or torque figures.

But when it comes to night time driving, a set of well positioned and operating headlights can be life saving.

There are four major types of headlights used in modern cars, the most basic of which is Halogen. This is followed by HID Xenons then LED and now, Laser lights. If you're wondering, yes, someone has indeed put a laser module in a set of headlights. That someone being Audi with the very limited edition Audi R8 LMX.

Having discussed this topic at the CarAdvice office extensively, we thought it best to produce a video showcasing different lighting technologies and their effectiveness on a dark and foggy morning in freezing Sydney.

While full LED and Laser lights will eventually make their way down to normal everyday cars in the years to follow, it's interesting to see how they are implemented in this early stages of life in today's supercars.
