Ford Performance has announced the third generation model Ford Fiesta ST ahead of its global public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

“Our next generation Fiesta ST is true to the philosophy of delivering cutting-edge technology to enhance every facet of the responsive Ford Performance chassis and powertrain,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president of product development, Ford of Europe.

The ST will be powered by an all-new three-cylinder, 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine producing 147kW and 290Nm of torque, a significant increase of the current model's output figures of 134kW and 240Nm. The ST will be capable of 0-100km/h in under 7 seconds.

This is the first time the popular ST model will receive a three-cylinder engine, a new performance variant of the multi-award winning 1.0-litre Eco Boost three cylinder engine debuted in a Fiesta shell back in 2014.

The all-new 1.5 utilities a turbocharger, high-pressure fuel injection and twin-independent variable cam timing, said to deliver high torque as low rpm.

Ford’s new cylinder deactivation technology will also be fitted to the new ST, a system that can automatically stop fuel delivery and valve operation in one of the engine’s cylinders when power isn’t needed. Ford say the the new technology can disengage or re-engage a cylinder in 14 milliseconds – 20 times faster than a blink of an eye.

The new model will also be the first Fiesta ST to have adjustable drive modes – engine, steering and stability controls can be configured between normal, sport and track settings.

“With selectable Drive Modes and an all-new EcoBoost engine delivering an unprecedented combination of performance and fuel-efficiency, the new model will deliver the most versatile, fun, engaging and rewarding Fiesta ST driving experience yet,” said Bakaj.

Inside, Ford customers will have access to a higher level of personalisation than ever before, choosing from a range of trim elements for the gear leaver, steering wheel, door pulls and dashboard.

Supportive Recaro seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and Ford’s SYNC 3 communication and entertainment system will be available as standard.

The third generation Ford Fiesta ST will go on sale after an early 2018 launch in both three-door and five-door variants.
